oh my gosh!!!!!!This is ADORABLE!!!!!!
omg i sooooooo want!!!!!!
This is so cool. My daughters have to have one now!
amazing! would you be willing to share the pattern?
Kicking myself for not making a pattern to reproduce it! Basically freehanded the pattern, unsure it'd work out. thanks so much for the comments!
Ahhh! I want this - its so on model for no pattern! Well Done :)
I see that giant totoro you were speaking of. Looks AWESOME! My GF would die for one.
That looks super comfy!
OMG ! *jealous* heheBy the way, you have wonderful drawings here :D I will follow you for sure !
Wow!! I definitely need this for my house!!! How cool! ^_^
can you make more, so people could buy it from you??
i want one too! Can you sell the pattern or the bed itself?
I could probably make another one and keep the pattern this time. I can't garauntee it'll turn out the same though haha. I'll let you know and thank you for the kind words!!
This is awesome, could you sell one to me?
gsh that's SO awesome, I wanna make one too :D
may u pllease make me 1 ilove him and im 10 i woulddo anything forit
you could definitely market this. let me know when you do! or when you make a pattern! this is incredible.
It looks fantastic! Great work! What kind of fabric did you use?
I adore this. You could totally market this. I do have a question. I am trying to make something similar (not Totoro though, just a random animal) but my plan is about the same size as this (at least in my head, who knows what will happen when i put the plan in motion) and I wanted to know what you stuffed it with and how much material you used to stuff it so I can plan/purchase accordingly.
Thank you for the kinds words all, the response was very unexpected. I had taken the stuffing out to make a pattern but just keep getting caught up in other things! Good luck on your own designs, and I'll post if I get the pattern finished. Jessi I bought about $50.00 worth of .99 IKEA pillows and used the stuffing from those. He turned out to be really heavy!
Totally in love. I see that you used IKEA pillows. Does that mean the stuffing is formed like the pillow shape or is it still loose? Does it bunch up? Did you use a base fabric or just one layer? What types of fabric did you use?Looking at making one of these for my two year old. (ok, so it'll be for me, but I hope she likes it too, lol)
Hi Robynne, sorry for the late response. I spent a little more money on the fur to get a nice soft, thick fabric that could hold up with just one layer. Double stitched every seam, everywhere since I knew kids would rough him up. The IKEA pillows were ripped open and I used the loose stuffing. So inside Totoro the stuffing was very loose and had to be pushed around to get the right shape. All fabric was from Michael's fabric store. Good luck!
Hi Stephan,LOVE this Totoro project, the finest on the web!Do you remember how much fabric you needed to buy to make him to this huge size? I have a baby on the way and I'd love for him/her to one day have something like this, a real 'best friend' cuddly Totoro :)Any assistance would be great, all the best,Phil
This is so cool！！Totoro has always been my favorite character. Is it possible for me to purchase one from you?
What did you use for the nose?
any chance you have a pattern available...?????
I wish I could make a pattern, but I'm afraid I don't know the first thing. I'm not sure what people would prefer, a paper patter to scale or digital PDF. If there are any tips on patterns and how people would prefer to receive them I'd love to hear. I am thinking of making guesses and measuring myself but not sure if that would suit people or not. Thanks!beebo: My kids have torn a couple seams on the whiskers and he probably needs a good dry cleaning since the furry material I chose got matted down a little. I don't know that anyone would want to buy it hehe, but I'd love to make a pattern. Phil: I wanted him to be over 6 feet so I want to say I got 2 yards for front, 2 yards for the back and then an extra 2 yards just in case. I cut out the belly and used that for the tail and ears i think and the arms were a yard. Jamie: I used a cheap, black synthetic leather for the nose, toes, whiskers and fingers. I stuffed and sewed the nose together first then attached it to the face.
I seriously would do anything for this. HOW in the world can I make that happen!!-Ashley Brant
Soooooo awesome!!!I've looked all over the web for this and couldn't find it anywhere. If you have patterns I can get this made locally (I am in thailand).... I am guessing it would not be a problem to ship without stuffing.
First and foremost of course I just want one :)
after months of drooling over this we finally made it... will have to blog about it soon - hope you don't mind me linking this post as our inspiration!
I wish you were selling these...you would make a killing, I'm sure. Great inspiration! I am going to attempt this project today, as a birthday gift to my son turning 8 on Feb 4th. Great job Stephan, and thanks for posting your tips for fabrication. Erin
Stephan, instead of trying to make a pattern, have you considered making them and selling them sans stuffing? It would be easy to ship then. Naturally every one of them would come out a little different but I think there is character in that. Just a thought! He is SO cute!!!Bravo!
Thanks for the continued comments! Dang.Tanya I'd love to see your version.Yeah Marney, my wife gets on me every time someone posts here that I need to make a pattern. I still hope I kick myself hard enough to get on it :)
Oh I really really love this! Would love to sleep on one or just to have one in my living room instead of a couch!
Hey, how did you attach the whiskers?? Did you make a hole and feed it through? or did you just sew it directly onto the face??Thank you!!
oh! and what kind of fabric did you use??
Thanks Emma :)Hey Mhea, I was going to poke holes to tuck the whiskers into the face and be very seamless, but decided to sew them directly onto the face for stability. My wife says sherpa wool, and I want to double check but it was one of the cheapest but softest grey wools at Johann Fabrics. I'm going to look into taking my totoro to a professional place and have them generate a digital and paper pattern if possible. If anyone knows of such a place I'd appreciate it!
It's gorgeous! My mom sent me a link to your blog since I have also made a totoro: http://touch-sit-sleep.blogspot.com/2012/02/totoro.htmlkeep up the awesome work.
Thank you for linking your Totoro Emily :) It looks even larger than mine, but surprisingly similar sizes! Really cute. I have started a digital pattern for mine, and will let everyone know when it's finished. I hope to include close-ups of the material and stitching as well.
Thanks Stephan,I've found a UK based website offering the fabric required, sorted. One other thing, what kind of thread did you use to stitch? Obviously it would need to be pretty heavy-duty due to the size! Hand sewn or machine?Cheers!Phil
Hey Phil, awesome!I just used a standard sewing machine. There were a couple different stitches I used but both pretty simple. The thread was standard sewing thread, charcoal and black colors. Most of the sewing was done with a single stitch (I'll be tracking down the measurement) and I just double stitched everything, went over it twice and that held really well. The other stitch was an embroidered zig zag stitch for around the eyes, nose and whiskers because I wanted those to be like thick outlines. I'd recommend going very slowly on this embroidered stitch and making sure it's not too spread out or too bunched up since that can jam the machine.Good Luck!
I am so looking forward to seeing your finished pattern! I am currently doing up a room for my daughter and it will be totoro themed, and she would go absolutely nuts for this!
Many people have requested a pattern so I am now selling a custom pattern of the Totoro I made through my blog. I've created a button at the bottom right of the sidebar that will accept paypal or credit cards. I want you guys to choose your own price from a dollar, five or ten if you feel it's worth it :)Please keep in mind this will be an amateur pattern, as this was my first. Upon purchase I will forward the digital pattern as a PDF to the email provided within 24 hours. I hope you enjoy it!
Hi Stephan,Firstly I must compliment you on your absolutely awesome Totoro!!!!I have been searching and searching the web for a giant totoro to sleep on.... and this is by far the most amazing thing I have come across!!.My only question is, As I am an adult and I would want to sleep on it would you recommend using some sort of big cushion as the belly and padding the head and limbs? or has the pillow padding you used held up? oh and how many pillows did you use roughly? I am also thinking of adding a detachable blanket over the tummy area with poppers or something,Then it would be like a giant totoro bed!!I cant wait until I have enough money to buy materials and time to make the thing.... OMG I'm so excited right now!!!!!!
Hey "Abracadabra" :)Great idea for the belly pocket. I've seen someone make a giant totoro with an open mouth too. The stuffing was probably 50-75 $1 pillows I got from IKEA. They held up fine, but you did have to "fluff" him after many uses with your arms to get that volume up so he wouldn't flatten out. If you can afford padding that'd be interesting and probably hold up well. I found foam padding to be too expensive personally. Either way this guy gets heavy.. and my wife couldn't lift him easily. Good Luck!
I'm in the middle of making one now! I've modified the pattern a bit, including putting in two layers of zippers, because we're going to fill it with bean bag styrofoam. (We got a few used bean bags from Freecycle and took out the innards -- otherwise we could never afford it!) Thanks so much for making the pattern available! It has saved me innumerable hours of work and frustration!
I have been looking everywhere for a giant totoro that didn't cost $1000 and this is amazing!!! I will most definately be making one, as soon as I can rope my mom into helping me as I cannot sew...=P But fantastic job, I love it!!! =)
Are you still offering the pattern for sale?
